Are you a smoker? Do you know a smoker? Looking for even more reasons to quit smoking cigarettes (or “fags”, as the Brits are wont to say)?
Since you’ve probably heard all about the horrible ways cigarettes can crush your health (and your wallet!), I’ll focus on some environmental reasons to stop smoking. If you won’t quit for yourself, maybe you’ll quit for good ol’ Mother Nature?
Don’t be like Mrs. Mac; quit smoking today!
At least 4.5 trillion non-biodegradable filter-tipped cigarettes are smoked and tossed out every single year.
600 million trees are chopped down and used each year just to dry out the tobacco, and cigarette machines use almost 4 miles of paper every single hour. Holy cow that’s a lot of trees destroyed just for cigarettes!
Not only all that, but most tobacco plants get up to 16 pesticide applications. That’s a whole mess-load of dangerous chemicals getting sprayed out into the environment, all for the purpose of making some cigarettes.
If you’re looking for more reasons or encouragement to quit smoking, por favor check out the Great American Smokeout, which is coming up on the third Thursday of November.
I hadn't thought of that angle, EcoJoe–cigarettes vs. Mother Nature: thanks! Luckily, I quit a long time ago, but will harass others to do so even more strongly now.
Great that you quit! Oooh, I don't know how good harassing will work. Remember, "You catch more flies with honey than vinegar." — Abraham Lincoln
4 miles of paper per hour is a weird stat when you don't know how wide the paper is – although I assume it's as wide as that used to roll a single cigarette.
I assume the same, but good point, Mr. (Dr.?) Wigbate.
